Native copper is used to make these artistic free-form sculptures. No two are alike and the shapes are open to many different visual interpretations. It has its natural formation as well as artificial creation.
Splash Copper is made by pouring molten copper at 2200 degrees F onto a flat surface. When the shapes are cooled, a green or turquoise colored chemical patina is applied, then highlights are buff polished to expose the glowing solid copper underneath. The sculptures are sprayed to preserve the finish and to prevent the copper from tarnishing.
Michigan is known for its native copper deposits, including oxidized specimens. Arizona mines produce oxidized splash copper. Russia's Ural Mountains have yielded notable specimens. Chile is famous for its large deposits including oxidized forms.
