Quartz crystal is one of the most abundant and versatile minerals on Earth. Quartz is found in a wide range of geological environments, including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. It is often found in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites.
Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica (silicon dioxide). The atoms are linked in a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall chemical formula of SiO2.
It comes mostly in clear (rock crystal), but can also be found in a variety of colors including milky, smoky, rose, amethyst (purple), citrine (yellow), and others due to impurities and irradiation.
Quartz crystals can generate an electric charge in response to mechanical stress. This property is utilized in various electronic devices, including watches and clocks. Quartz has unique optical properties, such as birefringence (double refraction), which makes it useful in lenses and other optical components.
