Cobaltoan calcite, also known as cobaltocalcite or cobaltian calcite, is a vibrant pink to magenta variety of calcite. Its striking color is due to the presence of cobalt impurities in the surrounding rock or groundwater. Chemical composition: CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate).
Cobaltoan calcite forms in hydrothermal veins through the precipitation of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich solutions. Over time, these minerals accumulate in cavities and fractures, forming beautiful crystal clusters and aggregates.
Notable localities for cobaltoan calcite include: DR Congo, Morocco, Sweden and Mexico.
