Bismuth is a brittle metal with a distinct, colorful, and iridescent appearance when oxidized. It is one of the heaviest elements and has a unique crystal structure that forms intricate, stair-stepped hopper crystals. It is classified as a semi-precious semi-metal.
Bismuth (Bi) is relatively rare in the Earth's crust, typically found in the form of native bismuth or as part of minerals such as bismuthinite (Bi₂S₃) and bismite (Bi₂O₃). It is often obtained as a byproduct of mining and refining other metals, such as lead, copper, tin, and tungsten. Bismuth crystals are often grown artificially using a controlled cooling process.
Non-Toxic to humans, it is used in both medicine and cosmetics. Also in Industrial Applications such as Alloys and Metallurgical Additives.
Bolivia, China, Mexico and Canada are notable sources of bismuth.
