An amethyst geode crystal is a stunning geological formation that showcases the beauty of amethyst within a hollow cavity or rock cavity. Amethyst is a variety of quartz (SiO₂) that crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system. It forms six-sided prismatic crystals with pointed terminations. The purple color of amethyst is caused by trace amounts of iron within the crystal lattice. It ranges in color from light purple to deep violet, with shades varying due to factors like impurities and exposure to natural radiation.
Amethyst geodes typically form in volcanic rocks, often within gas bubbles (vesicles) left by volcanic activity. Over time, silica-rich groundwater containing dissolved iron infiltrates these cavities. Slow crystallization within the cavity allows amethyst crystals to grow, forming a dense cluster of crystals lining the cavity walls.
Some of the primary sources around the world are: Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, US and Canada.
